BIM IS CHANGING THE DESIGN PROCESS

Building information modeling (BIM) is an integrated process built on coordinated, reliable information about a project from design through construction and into operations.

The Building Information Modeling is rapidly changing the building design into a collaborative team-based process that takes full advantage of the new technology. The design professionals now require various product information earlier in the project design process, so they can perform useful analysis and other life-cycle simulations.  In order to realize the activities, the objects with which the Building Information Model has been created need to provide sufficient data about their attributes.

While working on a project, designers very often need object models that are not included within the software package. They can create this object by themselves that is a time-consuming process and sometimes they lack skills to do it. Other solution they can do is to download or exchange user-generated files. Most of the time objects obtained this way are useless because they aren’t properly parameterized or they lack information.  Currently, there isn’t enough available BIM-enabled Building products content to meet this need.  With the fast adoption of Building Information Modeling software among the designers, the need for intelligent objects with accurate and reliable product information grows critically.

Many Building Product Manufacturers already invested in creating digital brochures and CAD libraries online on their own websites and products directory sites. However, only a small number of them have created proprietary BIM objects so far. A few innovative Building Products Manufacturers are investing now in BIM objects in order to be industry leaders, and as adoption inevitably and quickly spreads, more manufacturers will be willing to invest, if for no other reason than to match their competitors’ BIM offerings.
